Welcome to Doctor Who Answers TrekFan1984! Thanks for contributing to "Why does the 11th doctor have a different tardis then the 10th". Your help is much appreciated. However, to get the most out of your experience with us, please read our policies to make sure you know what is acceptable here. We don't want to have to delete questions or hand out blocks if we don't have to. Maybe you will like to contribute to our forums, where we discuss policy and other wiki running as well as just talk about the show itself, including speculation. Or maybe you just want to help out by asking and answering question in the main part of the wiki. Is John Hurt the Doctor? question Edit

Thanks for adding extra information to answers. However, it is not necessary to sign answer pages. If you leave a comment on a talk page, or a board such as the Waterooler, then signing is appropriate. But the actual Q&A stuff probably shoudn't have signatures. You as an Admin Edit

Hello TrekFanb1984

This Wiki has taken a serious turn for the worse. The amount of spam, CFD etc. is totally out of control. Usually this is the job of Admins to help clear up. The only problem is that the Admins seem to be on a permanent vacation. Someone who has just registered was granted Admin status, but seems to have followed the lead.

This site needs active Admins. I myself was actually an Admin, but was de-Admined due to someone having a personal grudge against me. Therefore, I am suggesting(and hoping) that you will apply for Adminship on Dr Who Answers. If you apply, you can be sure of my full support. This site really needs some major help, and you appear to be the best person for the job.

Thanks for the vote Master of Spiders  just wondering what besides general housekeeping of the site would be involved, keeping users informed & inline obviously. How do I apply to be an Admin?   I still can't ever rediredt pages after being here for some time.  Spam I can see, many people either forget to edit their mistakes or are Spammers. Message to both of you: Sorry I've been off lately. Decided it was time to go on a bit of a holiday once Corey Chambers agreed to become an admin so he could use his bot to help us more. Seems he didn't decide to stick around much. Icecreamdif was also starting to stick his head back in, so I thought I could afford to concentrate on other things for a few weeks. But judging by the amount of Candidates for Deletion I found today, I'm guessing that they didn't take up the active admin role.

Also, when it comes to you Spiders, I was actually thinking because of the obvious change in behaviour seen since you were de-adminned that I would suggest re-nomination at the beginning of Feb, a full 2 months after you were de-adminned (and to prove I'm not just making that up now, I mentioned it to CzechOut here (second message) (Also, please excuse the pink. I was creating some templates for another wiki and had to copy their theme to do so)). But since I can see you starting the conversation here, would you like to re-nominate yourself at the beginning of Feb? I would support you then if you did because the main problems I saw leading to demotion seem to have been solved.

I would also seriously look into supporting TrekFan1984 becoming an admin because of the current lack of editors, but because I don't know you so well, I would be interested in reading what benefits you think you could bring to this wiki or other reasons why you think you should be nominated before I give the definite green light. And of course at least one bureaucrat (either CzechOut or Icecreamdif) will have to agree with the nomination as well, but I do think that's likely. So go ahead and try a nomination! We could do with the help! Even if for some reason it is decided not to give you admin powers, I still hope you will continue to edit with us in the long run. DWA needs every user it can get! Re: Considering AdminshipEdit

If you want to learn how to do redirects, just check out Help:Redirection.

When it comes to adminship, the main job that admins need to do on this wiki which regular users can't is actually deleting bad questions. Most other tools such as categories, renaming, redirection, and basic asking and answering can all be done equally well by non-admins. However, there are some other tools admins have which other users don't, but they're not used as regularly. This is things like page protection, which should only really be done in cases of either edit wars or to protect important pages about the wiki, the ability to highlight forum threads if there is an important discussion for all users of the wiki to look at, and access to the MediaWiki files to change the look of the wiki. Also, I would hope that anybody who becomes an admin from now on would help out with the Facebook and Twitter pages for this wiki. If you want any more information, check out Help:How do I become an admin? Whether you decide to apply for adminship or not, just do whatever you feel is best and know you are always free to edit nomatter what user status you have! Weird extra formatting messing with deletion reasonsEdit

Hey TrekFan1984. I see you have marked a few questions for deletion and have tried to leave a reason for why those questions should be deleted. However, it seems you have been doing something weird with the formatting that is introducing loads of weird span tags into your work which then doesn't allow your reason for deletion to display. If you don't know what I'm talking about, see this diff here where I cleaned up one of these reasons so it would display properly (I didn't just outright delete the question because I think it should be left for a bit to see if anyone rephrases it for clarity). Are you by any chance copying standard delete reasons from a word doc or something when you tag pages? If you are, can I suggest maybe putting your list of things to copy in a plain text program like notepad so copying them across doesn't bring a whole bunch of extra formatting problems, or going into source mode to paste the delete tags? If you aren't copying across, then can you think of something else you may be doing to trigger the extra unnecessary formatting? This again can be avoided by editing in source mode. Thanks! Notepad definitely works as a way of storing deletion tags & reasons. I've been using it for that purpose for a long time & have never had any problems. One huge advantage is that I can give full links to the relevant policy sections, without having to type them out each time, so I don't need to use the (sometimes cryptic) shortcuts. --89.243.204.160 14:09, January 26, 2014 (UTC)

While normally the extra spans introduced from copying from Word wouldn't matter so much on a CFD, since it was messing with the display of the deletion reasons I thought it was worth a mention since it was stopping the asker from finding out what was wrong with their question and therefore give them a chance to fix it. Discussions/opinions in answers Edit

This site's policies are against opinions & conversations in answers. See Doctor Who Answers:Policies#Speculation/Opinions/Personal Views & Doctor Who Answers:Policies#No Conversations In An Answer Space. This differs from the policies of many similar sites & can therefore catch people by surprise. Your comment about the Moment in the answer to Why doesn't the Doctor go back in time and save the Time Lords? breaches the policies. There's already some discussion in the forum topic What has been your favourite anniversary special so far? about this & you might like to look at it, because the Moment isn't the only possible source of help. --89.243.204.160 14:45, January 26, 2014 (UTC)

Info - Links in deletion reasons Edit

In the reasons for deletion of Would you ever bring back someone like Rose Tyler?, you put a reference to the policy. Even inside the deletion tag, you still need to enclose that reference in double square brackets, in order to make it a link to the policy. (The same goes for any other wiki links you want to put in the reasons.)

I've put the brackets into the deletion tag on that question. If you use the question's History & compare the revisions, you can see both how it's done & the effect it has.

I've just had to turn a couple of other references into links. Maybe the above question was deleted before you could look at it.

Inside the tag, you need to use "See [[Doctor Who Answers:Policies#Speculation/Opinions/Personal Views]]" (shows up as "See Doctor Who Answers:Policies#Speculation/Opinions/Personal Views"), not just "See Doctor Who Answers:Policies#Speculation/Opinions/Personal Views". The same thing works for the other policy sections, too.

You can also link to the Watercooler with "the [[Board:Watercooler|Watercooler]] forum" (shows up as "the Watercooler forum").  --89.243.197.97 07:18, January 28, 2014 (UTC)

More info: It's better to use wiki links (which look like [[Doctor Who Answers:Policies#Must Be Understandable]]) than HTML links (which begin http: or similar) in deletion reasons. In fact, it's better to use wiki links wherever they can be used. See Doctor Who Answers:Policies#Preferably Wiki Links. Apart from any technical considerations, they're more readable when the page is displayed.

On the policy page, at the right of each section, you'll see a blue box giving a shortcut. That can be used in a wiki link to save typing: [[DWA:LINK]], for example, shows up as DWA:LINK & leads to the same place as the longer version I used earlier. Shortcuts can't be used in HTML links. (I have to admit that I seldom use the shortcuts, anyway, since I need only to copy from my Notepad file of delete tags & paste into the answer. That's even less typing than a shortcut.)

Redirection Edit

You were quite right to redirect Why does the doctor seem to regenerate in The Impossible Astronaut when he has no regenerations left? However, it didn't work. The redirection directive needs to use a wiki link to the target page (in this case, How was the doctor able to start a regeneration during The Impossible Astronaut if he was in the last of his regeneration cycles?), not a full URL (web address). I've amended the redirection page so that it now works.

If you're having trouble with redirection, take a look at Help:Redirection#How to do it.

In general, wiki links, not full URLs, should be used wherever possible, not just for redirection. Wiki links can be used to link to pages on other sites, not just on DWA, but you need to know the correct prefix for that other site. (We have a template that supplies the prefix for the Tardis Data Core, so you just need to use {{Tardis|Amy Pond}} to produce the link Amy Pond.)

One thing occurs to me that might be causing you problems is this:

If you copy & paste in the editor's visual mode (where links are shown in blue), any links in the text being copied get converted to full URLs but they look exactly the same on screen -- i.e., you can't see that there's been a change. This is, shall we say, a bit unhelpful.
To avoid this, you need to do both the copying & the pasting in the editor's source mode (basically, a plain-text editor).

This one still catches me out, from time to time. I sometimes forget that the software tries to be clever & ends up being the opposite.

Links in answers Edit

In the answer to What are the names of the people who played the Doctor?, I've changed your HTML links to use the "Tardis" template (which creates wiki links to TDC articles). The sole exception is the link to TDC's article "The Doctor", where I've used a wiki link directly, rather than via a template. Gallifreyan language questionsEdit

The best template to put on those pages is in fact {{Delete|We cannot translate into Gallifreyan for you as per [[DWA:FICTION]]}}. There might be some confusion here because it is a relatively new rule only imposed a few months ago, despite many earlier attempts. The problem with those earlier attempts was that no valid reason could be found for deleting those questions other than that they were annoying. Then 70/68/whatever his IP is nowadays suggested a rule outlawing questions which concerned applying Doctor Who concepts to real life, the original thread of which can be found here. Upon deciding that rule, it was found that that was the connection to be used to outlaw questions about the Gallifreyan language, since it is applying the fictional concept of the Gallifreyan language onto real life words. Trouble with deletion tags Edit

I've just reverted your edit to How did the TARDIS travel to a being? It was already tagged for deletion & your edit had somehow messed up the deletion tag, so that it no longer worked correctly.

I've also had to correct the tag on What is matt smiths email address? There, you used a colon instead of a pipe between the tag name & its parameter (the reason).

In the tag on Dr i m smart? you seem to have used some strange mixture of HTML link & wiki shortcut to link to the relevant policy. Typing the shortcut as [[DWA:CLEAR]] ought to result in DWA:CLEAR -- a simple wiki link using the shortcut, not the hybrid thing that appears in the tag.

I don't know why you're having such trouble with deletion tags but you are you're having trouble with them & it's becoming a nuisance having to correct them. Please find out what's going wrong & put it right. --89.241.223.23 02:54, May 23, 2014 (UTC)

"Device" spam Edit

There's been a spate of spam questions lately about a "device used to call anyone as long as you knew the area code" or parts/variants of that wording. You've tagged at least one of them recently on other grounds but they're known spam & Corey Chambers is trying to block the stuff out. Hey TrekFan1984, thanks for the message about another device question. However, for future purposes please remember that when you are linking to pages that are on this wiki please include the page name in [[ ]] brackets, otherwise the wiki will think that it is linking to a page which is not on this wiki.

Thanks again for letting me know though! I've gone ahead and deleted the question, as well as protecting the page so that it can't be recreated.

In the deletion tag you put on How do you read gallifrayian? there was a load of stuff -- formatting, HTML links (instead of wiki links) -- that I'm pretty certain you didn't mean to put there. I've removed the (presumably) unintended parts to leave what I think you were aiming for. What would happen if a TARDIS is in another TARDIS? Edit

The question What would happen if a TARDIS is in another TARDIS? refers to a situation that has occurred (in the classic series). It's understandable, so I've removed the deletion tag & left a note on the question's talk page. Although I remember that the situation occurred, I can't remember what happened, so I can't actually answer the question myself. Season & Series confusion Edit

For reasons best known to itself, the BBC restarted the season numbering with the 2005 revival. Instead of calling them seasons & continuing the numbering from where the classic series left off, they called them series & began at 1 again. That was probably intended to avoid confusion but it has the opposite effect. What's showing at present is Series 8. (Season 8 was in 1971.)

I thought I'd better warn you about this terminological pitfall because you added the "Season 8" category to a question about "Deep Breath". I've replaced the "Season 8" category with the "Series 8" category for that question but there might be other questions that I've not found where the same change needs to be made. --89.243.196.67 11:52, September 1, 2014 (UTC)

Deleting categories: If you mean removing them from a page, such as that question about "Deep Breath", it's simple (but, of course, it's only simple once you already know how). You need to edit the answer, either in the visual editor or in the classic editor.

In the visual editor:

On the Settings menu (looks like 3 horizontal bars), choose Categories.
In the Categories display, click on the one you want to remove. This shows a panel that has a dustbin (trash can) symbol at top right.
Click on the dustbin (trash can) symbol. The panel will close & the category will vanish from the display.
Press "Apply changes".
Publish the edit.

In the classic editor:

In the Categories panel (at right) hover the mouse over the the one you want to remove. At its right, you'll see a pencil symbol & a dustbin (trash can) symbol.
Click on the dustbin (trash can) symbol. The category will vanish from the display.
Publish the edit.

Personally, I prefer the classic editor. It's less effort.

If you want to delete a category page, you have to tag it for deletion (same as a question) & wait for an admin to do the actual deletion. Note: You should only tag a category that has no questions in it, so you'd need to remove the category from any questions, using one of the methods above. This is usually necessary only with a misnamed category.
